What is Quality Management like in the ever-changing and fast paced world of a construction project?
The Evergreen Line was a major undertaking built in the suburbs of Burnaby, Port Moody, and Coquitlam, BC, and its construction was no stranger to the opportunities and difficulties that exist when trying to work in a busy urban setting amidst the glare of the public eye. As the Province’s Quality Manager, WSP Canada monitored the performance of the contractor’s quality management program as they faced various operational and construction requirements and challenges. It’s not always easy to plan for quality in an industry that works fast, involves people of diverse experience, and contractors and suppliers of all sizes that sometimes have different objectives. There are lessons to be learned from these challenging and dynamic circumstances.
In 1989 the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) expanded its mandate beyond education and training to include applied research that focused on helping industrial clients. Among the research teams formed was the health technology research group which focused on developing new innovative health technology and on conducting research studies on the interaction between users and technology. After establishing itself with some project successes, the health technology research group took a team-based approach formalizing existing processes and adding new processes to complete a quality management system certified to ISO 13485 and ISO 9001.The BCIT research group and its quality system have evolved into a diverse and successful group now known as MAKE+ located at the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation at BCIT. Operating under a quality system brings added value to clients in BC industry and to students and faculty at BCIT.

Innovation in laboratory Proficiency Testing: Improving how we improve quality in the medical laboratory
When patients and their physicians have a laboratory test performed, they make the assumption that the information they receive is accurate and meaningful. Most of the time they are correct; but unfortunately sometime they are not. Proficiency Testing is the process by which laboratories are given samples of known composition to test to determine if they can get the right answer.
Many proficiency testing programs only assess the actual testing of the sample (examination phase), but studies demonstrate that more errors occur either before the sample is tested (pre-examination) or during the creation and send-out of a report (post-examination). Laboratories can also make errors in safety, or quality control that occur at the same time as the examination (pre-examination). Effective Proficiency Testing must address all phases. Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing (CMPT) program provides samples and materials to test all phases using a variety of techniques to help laboratories provide clinically relevant, accurate and meaningful information to support patient and physician confidence.
